Bill Ward est le batteur ainsi que le cofondateur du groupe de rock Black Sabbath. Né en 1948, à Birmingham en Angleterre, on peut également l’entendre chanter sur certaines chansons.
Au départ, Bill Ward est batteur dans le groupe Mythology avec Tony Iommi. Ils forment en 1968 Black Sabbath avec Ozzy Osbourne et Geezer Butler du groupe Rare Breed. Le groupe s’appellera Polka Tulk Blues puis Earth et enfin Black Sabbath. Le heavy metal est né !
A partir de 1970, le groupe sort presque un album tous les ans Black Sabbath (1970), Paranoid (1970), Master of Reality (1971), Volume 4 (1972), Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (1973), Sabotage (1975) et Technical Ecstasy (1976).
En août 1980, Bill Ward quitte le groupe et joue avec Max Havoc. il revient pour l’album Born Again en 1983. Après une maladie, il revient dans la formation pendant l’été 1984.
Puis ce sera pour Bill Ward, départs et retours dans le groupe. Il joue en 1985 au Live AID de Philadelphie.
En 1990, il se lance dans une carrière solo et sort son premier album Along the Way. En 1994, il revient dans Black Sabbath sur la tournée Cross Purposes puis le quitte à nouveau.
On le verra en 1997 sortir un nouvel album solo When the Bought Breaks puis joué au sein de Black Sabbath et participé à Reunion en qui sort en 1999.
En 2002, il sort un troisième opus en solo, Straws.
Ayant des ennuis de santé, il a désormais un mode de vie plus sain. Il reviendra dans Black Sabbath entre 1999 et 2012.
